Grower's Notes
February 13, 2012
Good morning
After the prolonged cold spell we have "enjoyed" marginally warmer temperatures today which is a welcome relief after Friday night's -15c. How penetrating that frost has been on the Carrots but the thick layer of straw covered by fleece will have seen them through safely we hope.
It is noticeable that Continental crops are more expensive this week as they have been significantly worse affected than we have and particularly transport was delayed last week.
I haven't been to the Glasshouse over the weekend but most of the crops should be ok. We are running out of leaves to cut though and look forward to some regrowth but will probably have to wait until March.
I am glad I drained the irrigation system though.
Hopefully the Atlantic weather systems can gain the upper hand and we can see some warmer air and some much needed rain. With the day length noticeably longer it is time for early sowings so a milder spell would be welcome.
Despite the cold we do not anticipate any radical disruption although Mushrooms have been characteristically reluctant despite their controlled environment. Whether we find any other chill damage remains to be seen. It has been very mild this winter and disruption has been minimal and perhaps now we can start to look forward to Spring which will pose it's own problems I think. Will it rain or won't it, that will be the issue.
Best wishes
