Grower's Notes

February 13, 2012
Good morning
After the prolonged cold spell we have "enjoyed" marginally warmer temperatures today which is a welcome relief after Friday night's -15c. How penetrating that frost has been on the Carrots but the thick layer of straw covered by fleece will have seen them through safely we hope.
It is noticeable that Continental crops are more expensive this week as they have been significantly worse affected than we have and particularly transport was delayed last week.
I haven't been to the Glasshouse over the weekend but most of the crops should be ok. We are running out of leaves to cut though and look forward to some regrowth but will probably have to wait until March.
I am glad I drained the irrigation system though.
Hopefully the Atlantic weather systems can gain the upper hand and we can see some warmer air and some much needed rain. With the day length noticeably longer it is time for early sowings so a milder spell would be welcome.
Despite the cold we do not anticipate any radical disruption although Mushrooms have been characteristically reluctant despite their controlled environment. Whether we find any other chill damage remains to be seen. It has been very mild this winter and disruption has been minimal and perhaps now we can start to look forward to Spring which will pose it's own problems I think. Will it rain or won't it, that will be the issue.
Best wishes
Grahame and Lizzie Hughes

Hughes' News!

February 7, 2012
Good morning
Winter has arrived with several inches of snow. In most cases the growers have exercised foresight and harvested early where possible although Kale will have to wait until Tuesday I think , in the hope of better conditions.
Whether or not we will experience delays in imports we will discover on Monday but the disruption seems very widespread so it could be a challenging week.
Inevitably there will be no Purple Sprouting Broccoli this week. It has been picked out and we'll have...

News from Grahame and Lizzie

January 30, 2012
Good morning
The Purple Sprouting Broccoli was a refreshing change. It is very early but is in very good condition. It's progress will be weather related I'm sure but less likely to sudden flowering as it is when you get into April and the temperatures can suddenly soar. But don't expect continuity.
As anticipated there is a gap in the supply of Cauliflower, early maturity has disrupted continuity in Lincolnshire and although Spring varieties are coming on sporadically in Suffolk, there ...

Good morning
A more moderate week after the bluster of the gales.Little damage was done in the Glasshouse which was a relief and the abnormally mild temperatures have benefited the salad leaves and we'll have some Butterhead in a few weeks. The frost this weekend is less welcome though. The loss of protective fleece outside is more of a concern. Organic Carrots do tend to have more foliage than conventional and this does help to protect against frost to a degree but I think we are more l...

New from Hughes'

January 11, 2012
Good morning

Not too much change although there is some Purple Sprouting Broccoli from Lincolnshire enjoying the mild weather if not the wind.
Wind has inevitably been the week's dominating issue, causing the most unpleasant harvesting conditions ever at nearby Breckland Organics, harvesting field crops on Tuesday. I was in the glasshouse which was nervous but ok but on Wednesday night it picked up some more energy and blew lots of crop protecting fleece into the hedgerows as well as fel...

New Year Notes

January 3, 2012
Good morning
I hope you have all enjoyed a restful break. As ever it seems all to brief but nonetheless welcome.
January enters very gently and the whole period has been remarkably clement enabling the Christmas campaign to be fairly calm with no disruption. Last year we were thawing Sprouts and Leeks and afraid to leave anything out too long for fear of frost. As a result, I think the quality of produce this Christmas was exceptional and thanks to all the producers for that.
The New Year w...

Suppliers' Seasonal Message

December 30, 2011
Good morning
One notable event is that we passed our annual Soil Association Inspection last Friday with the only a few minor flaws such as the use of incorrect Soil Association Symbol and not keeping a planting diary, I've never been good at that but I must mend my ways after all these years. There is always some form of labelling or record keeping I've slipped up on.
Anyway at least that is taken care of for another year.

And so we come to Christmas and a welcome and pleasant break from...

Hughes (Roofs) News

December 14, 2011
Good morning
It seems incredible that Christmas is nearly here. The dates fall kindly for us in terms of deliveries.  We should have plenty of availability but need extra notice to coordinate harvesting
We look forward to better harvest conditions this year than last, although you never know.

We also look forward to some sunshine as the installation of solar panels was completed on all the warehouse roofs on our small complex of around 25units. It has been a race to finish in time for th...

Growers' News

November 7, 2011
Good morning
November is upon us, and although still remarkably mild, the early evenings certainly give a feeling of bleaker times to come.
We could do with some cold weather to slow down the whitefly on Brassicas, which have been troublesome this year. While we have seen a little root fly in the carrots, we expect this to improve as we work further into the field as most of the damage is peripheral. Warm weather does liven the wild life up though, so the sooner they chill the better.

Grahame and Lizzie's News

October 31, 2011
Good morning
We've had an enjoyable weekend in London, combining a visit to our newly resident daughter, Polly, with a most enjoyable evening at a celebratory dinner to mark the tenth anniversary of Organic Lea in Walthamstow. Their work in developing urban production and distribution has been  exemplary and we have been pleased to be associated with this for several years now supplying supplementary produce and occasional advice and it was great to be part of the celebration.
The short...
